A recent study examining the social network’s sexiest users suggests that it may not be as welcoming as it once was.

Facebook knew Instagram was pushing girls to skinny and harmful content

One in three teen girls says that Instagram makes their body image problems worse. According to the social media research community, this is an alarming discovery. It’s already known that Instagram is linked to higher rates of depression and anxiety among teens. But now it’s clear that Facebook knew all of this and yet did nothing to stop it.

The story was based on documents leaked by a whistleblower. The papers were obtained by the Wall Street Journal. The Wall Street Journal also published an article detailing the toxicity of the platform for teen girls.

The documents show that Meta (now called Facebook) knew that Instagram was pushing dangerous content to young females. In fact, the company tried to push teens to create such content.
